Big News: We bought a building!

It’s located on Tennessee Avenue, two doors down from our current location, which we also have new plans for, on Charleston’s West Side. So, what are these big plans you may be asking yourself? Well, let us tell ya!

Why do we want to do these things?

We live in a city and state that has a constant stream of people leaving. That can be hard on the heart—for those that stay and those that leave. We want to invest in this place that means so much to us. We chose to make our home here and even if it’s not always easy, we love this place and want to do as many positive things as we can here. We want to continue to create spaces for folks to gather, be inspired, and support each other. We want to put our roots down and help grow this community.

How you can help.

We’re currently remodeling the new building and as you may have guessed, it ain’t cheap! We’ve hosted a lot of fundraisers for other folks, but this is the first time we’ve done one for Kin Ship. It’s a lil scary, but we decided to get out of our own way and see if anyone would like to help us make it a faster, less risky endeavor. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help cover remodeling costs for the new building. The fundraiser will be open until September 2nd. If by some crazy chance we raise more than $25,000, we’ll just make the event space, gallery, and new KSG even better! Thanks in advance for even reading this far!

Updates: August 23rd

Wanted to give you a quick update on The Future is Cozy Fundraiser. The last day to donate is coming up –Sept 2nd. We weren’t really sure how the fundraiser would go when we launched it, so we shot for the moon and set the goal at $50,000. We’ve currently raised $19,600—thank you all for that! You’re helping us invest in our community, celebrate it, and create new spaces for folks to gather and be inspired. We’ve decided for this last week to reel in our goal a little and shoot for raising $25,000--we really wanna get to the tip of the beagle’s nose! $25,000 will still help us tremendously with the project and get us to that opening day quicker!

So far we’ve raised $14,200!

Thank you all so much for your generous donations and for helping us make some new, positive things happen.

The rest of the building is really coming together! Here’s some before and after shots some of the other work we’ve completed so far:

New Storefront at 617 Tennessee Ave. This is complete! Bare and boring right now, but complete.

New store area looking toward the Tennessee Ave. Can't wait to reveal this 100 year old polished concrete floor it contains lots of local river rock and was refinished in one night by a Romanian dude named "Cat Man".

New store area looking toward the back of the building and toward Washington St.

Back wall of the new store where the counter will be. The wood in this photo was milled down from rough WV red oak.

New office and shipping areas almost finished. We're excited not to be stacked on top of each other.
